We are located in the Parque Natural Sintra-Cascais, about 40 minutes drive northwest of Lisbon. West of the house is the Praia do Magoito beach, accessible on foot by following a steep forest path (~15min) or a longer but more gentle path (~40min).
Getting Here and Away
- Formally our address is “R. Carregadouro 25, São João das Lampas.” Confusingly, Google Maps thinks our address is “Rua das Sardinheiras 25, São João das Lampas,” and since most people, including Uber drivers, make use of Google Maps to navigate, it is best to use the “Rua das Sardinheiras 25” address. Alternatively, Apple Maps correctly locates “R. Carregadouro 25.”
- Car rental from the Lisbon airport can be quite inexpensive, depending on the season. The most efficient rental services are “in-terminal.” The cheaper off-site rental companies can result in a 30-40 minute delay because of shuttle service and delays in checking out vehicles.
- The “IC19” is a free motorway that does not require the Via Verde electronic toll collection system. From the airport, follow IC19 in the direction of Sintra. As you approach Sintra, take the exit with the brown sign for “Praias.” Then take the next exit with another brown sign saying “Praias.” Now follow signs for Magoito.
- Uber or Bolt cost between €30 and €40 from the airport.
- Public transportation takes about two hours. At the airport metro station, buy a “Navegante” metro card with at least €10 on it. Take the metro to Oriente; go to the top level of the Estação do Oriente, validate your card, and climb aboard a train headed for Sintra; alight at Portela de Sintra, which is the second to last stop. Take either bus 1249 (faster) or 1254 (slower) to Magoito. Alight from the bus at stop Estr. de Santa Maria 122, which is next after seeing Luso’s Café on your left together with the Parque de Merendas (a forested BBQ picnic area). Follow R. das Regateiras on foot until you make a right on R. Carregadouro. We are the last house at the end of the street.
